The most interesting facts about Scotland!

 

1.Scotland had 790 islands off its main shore. Many of these islands have unique island communities and are access by airplane or ferry. Some of these islands have beautiful beaches.                                                       

2.The largest cities in Scotland: Scotland has four major cities. Glasgow is the largest city. Edinburgh is Scotland’s second largest city, and its capital. Aberdeen in the north is Scotland’s third largest city. Lastly, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city.                                               

3.Castles: are located all across Scotland. Not only were they home to Kings & Queens, but to Clan Chiefs and noble families. While there was once over 3,000 castles in Scotland, today there are 605 castles spread out across the country.                                                                         

4.Scottish national animal: unicorn.                                                     

5. Animals you’ll find in Scotland: puffins, scottish wildcat, badger, red squirrel,pine marten, sheep, mountain hare, golden eagle,                                                                                                     

6.Where do people live?:The majority of people in Scotland live in urban areas surrounding Glasgow and Edinburgh.                                               

7.Redheads:Scotland has one of the largest populations of people with red hair in the world. In Scotland, redheads are known as “gingers”.    

8.Multicultural Scotland: People from around the world come to live, work and study in Scotland. There are over 170 languages spoken in Scotland, and those include Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian  Japanese.                                                                                    

9.St.Andrew is Scotland’s patron saint. Saint Andrew was a fisherman and an Apostle of Jesus.                                                                                 

10.Bagpipe is the Scottish national instrument.                                       

11.A kilt is a traditional piece of clothing for men and boys from the Scottish Highlands.Tartan is a pattern of criss-cross patterns of colors. Tartan designs can be put on kilts, scarves, blankets and other items. Tartans can be used to symbolize clans, individuals or organizations.

12.Loch Ness is a very large, deep lake in the north of Scotland. Many people think a large monster lives in it. People come from around the world to try to catch a sight of ‘Nessie’.                                                             

13. Scottish sports: golf, football, rugby, cycling,curling, shinty.               

14.Scottish inventors: John Logie Baird (the first working television system),  Alexander Graham Bell ( world’s first telephone -1876) 

15.Scottish food: haggis.
